Three Tips for Good Thumb Placement

Good thumb placement behind the guitar neck is a fundamental part of guitar technique, and it’s something you should focus on early.

ONE
You should keep your thumb behind the neck so it isn’t visible from the front. If your thumb wraps over the top, it can limit your finger movement and make it harder to reach notes cleanly - especially when you are playing scales or more complex chords.
TWO
Aim to position your thumb at roughly a right angle to the neck, rather than letting it run parallel along it. This gives you a more stable anchor and allows your fingers to approach the fretboard with better control and strength.
THREE
You should also place your thumb roughly in line with the spacing between your fingers - usually between your first and fourth fingers. This helps you maintain a balanced hand position, and reduces unnecessary tension and buzzing.
By building this habit early, you will play more efficiently, avoid strain, and give yourself greater flexibility as your technique improves.
